Phosphorous exists in several forms with different colors and properties: waxy white-yellow, red granules, violet, and black which resembles graphite. White phosphorous emits a glow in the presence of oxygen, from which the term phosphorescence was coined, but is actually a different process called chemiluminescence due to the chemical reaction creating the glow.
