Originally named Kalium, from the Arabic word al-qalyah meaning “plant ashes,” the English name Potassium comes from the word potash referring to the method by which it was obtained – placing the ash of burnt wood or tree leaves in a pot, adding water, heating, and evaporating the solution. It is a silver metal that will turn a flame to a lavender color. Potassium is essential for proper nerve function.
