*** This is a sample image - Elements are painted to order. The painting you receive will have slight variations.
Fresh surfaces of Iron are a lustrous silver-gray, but change when exposed to the water and oxygen in air to create rust (Iron oxide). Iron oxide occupies more volume than the metal itself, which causes it to flake off and expose fresh surfaces for corrosion. From ancient times to today Carbon is added to Iron to significantly strengthen the metal.
