A silver-gray metal that resembles iron, Manganese has been used to create colorful pigments since ancient times. Some of the cave paintings in Lascaux, France use Manganese-based pigments. Its compounds are still used today to create pigments such as Manganese violet and burnt umber and it used to be used in Manganese blue which is now considered toxic. It will turn a flame yellow-green.
