The name comes from the Greek word thallos, meaning “green shoot or twig” in reference to the pure green color it changes a flame into. It is a soft gray metal that creates highly toxic compounds. In the past it was used in rat poisons and insecticides (and as a murder weapon) but has been prohibited in the US due to safety concerns.
